Talking regulation and responsible gambling in Rio

The regulation, responsible gambling measures and sporting integrity required in the Brazilian gambling market will be a hot topic of conversation as EPIC host a panel with some esteemed guests at SBC Summit Rio on Thursday.

The ‘Law of Bets’, enacted 14 months ago in Brazil, has seen the country take significant steps regarding the regulation of online gambling and betting, and the effect this will have in a country that had previously outlawed most forms of gambling will be pivotal to the discussion during the panel on ‘RG’s role in future proofing sustainability and player protection in LatAm’.

Joining representatives from EPIC will be José Francisco Manssur, former Special Advisor to the Executive Secretary of the Ministry of Finance of Brazil and Vinicius Sousa dos Santos, Director of Institutional Relations and Strategic Partnerships, Sport Integrity Global Alliance (SIGA) Latin America, as the panel look at the crucial balance between sustainability and player protection in emerging markets across the continent.

The conversation – running from 3.40pm to 4.20pm on the Player Protection Stage at the Rio event – will also feature EPIC’s head of delivery Dave Sproson and senior business development manager Craig Cornforth as panelists, with moderation from senior marketing consultant Colin Stokes.

The discussion has been facilitated thanks to EPIC’s relationship with SIGA, who share EPIC’s interest in the subject matter, as global advocates on sporting integrity. Using both EPIC and SIGA’s expertise from work in diverse global markets, the panel will take the chance to discuss shared desires for effective regulation, the importance of responsible gambling practices in emerging markets to reduce regulatory risks, and how effective harm minimisation strategies have worked from the outset in other fledging regulated markets.

“We’re excited to be working with SIGA and some potential new partners in Brazil as we look to move into a new market and a new continent for EPIC,” explained Craig.

“If we can get safer gambling right from the outset in the new Brazilian gambling market and other LatAm countries where the regulated market is still young, it’s going to be more sustainable and safer in the long term for all the customers.

“The sporting integrity element is also a huge topic. SIGA are very keen to use our global expertise from previous programmes in sport to address this subject, so we will be looking to engage the audience on this matter to help them understand how gambling and sport can most safely co-exist in a part of the world that has such a huge sporting passion.”
